Belts
are not of singular importance in Hoshin. They are reflections
of accomplishments and knowledge, and are based on the
godai of ninpo as well as the chakra of esoteric yoga.
The system is American and taught in English. The ranks
are similar to the Japanese with colored belts representing
kyu grades, with stars showing divisions of knowledge
within the grades, and a black belt with stripes or
stars representing levels of dan grading. The circular
patch indicates a ryu member. Senior instructors may
wear a blue gi top. Training
DVD's of the core techniques for each belt level
are available for purchase. Specialty training is available
from the senior instructors (Yondan or Godan) upon request.
Fees
include tuition to the individual instructor, association
membership, and testing fees. Tuitions vary according
to location and dojo size.Association
fees of $40 US for new members or $30US renewal
association fees are paid annually to Gord Hessie-soke
by all students and instructors. Half of the grading
fees for belt testing are submitted to Gord Hessie-soke
prior to the test and half to the instructor administering
the test. The instructor will notify Gord Hessie - soke
of the results. All certificates of kyu and Dan rank
come from the Gord Hessie - soke, chopped and signed
by him and your instructor. Students who feel ready
to test must discuss it with their sensei, submit a
request to Gord Hessie - soke, and schedule the date.
As long as the association dues are up to date and your
instructor agrees, you can test. In the event that an
instructor doesn't approve, a student may appeal directly
to Gord Hessie - soke to resolve the situation. No instructor
overrides the decisions of Gord Hessie - soke; however,
he respects the word of his instructors and an appeal
should not be approached lightly. We are not a quick
belt system and some of the techniques and disciplines
require time and effort.
To
achieve a belt, a student must pass a written and verbal
test as well as demonstrate physical mastery of the
associated skills and techniques. Each belt requires
a higher level of competence and subtlety.
